Weekly Update: May 10

Good afternoon families.

We continued to explore patterns this week in math. Students continued to find the pattern rule for a set of numbers, and worked in partners to determine the pattern rule of various patterns. We then learned how to find the pattern rule between two sets of numbers, and used the pattern to create input output tables. 

In Social Studies, students learned about the fur trade, and will be engaging in a fur trade game next week. We continued creating amazing poetry in ELAL - making concrete poems (shape poems that take the shape of whatever subject the poem is about) and black out poetry. These will be up during our celebration of learning next week.



We made toilet paper hamburgers in Art and students had so much fun sculpting their hamburgers. We will be painting them next week! We also had our community clean up yesterday, where students in grade 5 and 6 picked up garbage around Ramsay community. It was a beautiful day for it!


A few reminders:

  • We have school on Monday to Thursday next week.
  • Thursday, May 16th is our Celebration of Learning from 6:00-7:30pm. We invite all students and families to come see what all students have been doing with a gallery walk around the school.
  • Our end of the year field trips have been confirmed:
    • Calgary Zoo on Wednesday, June 12
    • Royal Tyrell Museum on Monday, June 17 (with a late arrival back to school at 5:15pm - you will need to pick up your student from the school)
    • Thank you to everyone who offered to volunteer!

Weekly Update October 2-6

Happy Friday! This week, we began looking into estimating and comparing whole numbers. Students examined what it means to estimate and compare, and began a partner activity where they must research real estate prices around Calgary, rounding and comparing the prices. We learned about the elements of a story, and began to chart the picture book 'Where the Wild Things Are' on a story mountain. In social studies, students started their Amazing Race inquiry project, where they are traveling to the six regions of Canada and learning about their natural resources, the Indigenous groups in the region and how the region contributes to the Canadian identity. In science, students learned about different types of animals and plants. They had a blast with their adaptation science experiment yesterday, where they had to choose one of four tools (a fork, a spoon, a chopstick or a straw) to pick up as many beans from rice as they could in only 30 seconds. Weekly Update: June 14

Hello families! It's hard to believe we only have two weeks left before summer holidays. Students went on our field trip to the Calgary Zoo this week. They had a blast working to complete a scavenger hunt, which included challenges such as taking a picture of an animal that hibernates, taking a group picture standing like flamingos next to the flamingos and finding out the names of the gorillas. Thank you again to the parent volunteers who came out to support our students during the field trip! In math, students continued work on algebraic expressions, focusing on multiplication and division. They completed an emoji algebra challenge, where they were given different emoji puzzles, and had to find out the unknown values of the images. Next week, students will have an algebra quiz on Wednesday. In ELAL, students finished their fractured fairy tales unit with a comparison of the picture book Rapunzel by Paul O. Weekly Update: June 21

Happy last Friday of the year everyone! We started the week with our field trip to the Royal Tyrrell Museum! Students had a blast digging for dinosaur bones, going on a hike in the badlands, and competing in a relay race as a pack of raptors. For math, students finished their work on algebra with a review and a final test. The remainder of the year will be spent working on our math fluency, and practicing our skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In ELAL, students had a final reading assessment and for National Indigenous Peoples Day, learned about treaty 7 and the Siksika Nation. After learning about the Siksika Nation's coat of arms, students created their own coat of arms on our last community walk of the year. At their sit spot, students including images and symbols in a coat of arms, and described how the images/symbols were important to them. They then shared one important image during a sharing circle.
