Weekly Update: May 24
Thank you to everyone that came out to our Celebration of Learning last week! It was great to see you, and I hope you enjoyed seeing all your student's hard work. Here are a few images from our class that evening:
This week, students created tables of values from patterns, then worked to graph the patterns onto grid paper. They worked in partners and independently to come up with observations for various graphed patterns. We will be finished our patterns unit on Monday with a final test.
In Science, students learned about different ways to separate mixtures, such as decanting, distillation, filtration, and magnetic separation. They also considered different real world applications for separation mixtures. In Social Studies, students researched the various roles citizens of New France had, such as habitant, seigneur, voyageur, coureur de bois, filles du roi, etc. They will be taking on the role of one of these citizens with a creative writing activity next week.
In ELAL, we started a new class read aloud, "The Unteachables" by Gordon Korman. We began exploring fairy tales. In pairs, students choose one classic fairy tale to read and create a story mountain for. We discussed how fractured fairy tales are different by comparing The Three Little Pigs, first with Disney's Silly Symphony of the Three Little Pigs, then the picture book "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!" by Jon Scieszka. Students then explored other fractured fairy tales, determining how they are different from the original fairy tale.
In PE, we started lacrosse and students practiced throwing and catching the ball, as well as scooping the ball up from the ground through a variety of games.
Next week:
- We will be going on our next community walk on Monday, May 27 from 1:30-2:45pm.
