Weekly Update: June 7
Good afternoon! These past two weeks have been busy for our grade 5s.
In math, students finished their patterns unit and began our final math unit on algebra. They explored the concept of preservation of equality by solving algebra puzzles online. Students reviewed the concept of variables in relation to algebraic expressions. They learned how to isolate the variable in equations with addition and subtraction, and verify that their answer was correct. Next week students will be learning how to isolate the variable in equations involving multiplication and division.
In Science, students learned about the process of crystallization. They learned that crystals grow from a solution of liquid and when the solute is super dissolved in the solvent (supersaturation), crystals form on the string as the solvent evaporates. They completed a crystals lab, where they made a saturated solution with water and table salt and suspended a pipe cleaner shape from a string into the water. Crystals began to form within the next few days on the string.
In ELAL, students continued to listen to our class read aloud The Unteachables, and students also finished final preparations for their reader's theatre of a fractured fairy tale. They performed it for the class and all groups did amazing! In Social Studies, students finished their New France diary entries and began a final group research project on one important historical group in Canada's past.
In Music: As the school year draws to a close, I wanted to share the exciting musical progress our students have made in May. Here's a summary of what we have been working on: The upper grades have enjoyed non-stop ukulele fun this month! They have learned to identify and play each string on the ukulele, read chord charts, and are now proficient in the C, F, G, and Am chords. We've had a fantastic time playing popular songs such as "Thunder" by Imagine Dragons and "Waka Waka" by Shakira.
Last week we also went on our second last community walk, where students created their own fairy tale set in their sit spot. We shared a few of their fairy tales in a sharing circle at the end of our day.
