Weekly Update: June 27

Happy summer holidays everyone!! It's hard to believe we've already come to the end of the year.  This week, students had a fantastic activity day on Tuesday! We first got to go through Fitset Ninja, a wonderful obstacle course with a variety of stations. For lunch, students ordered hot dogs or veggie burgers from a food truck. Then students spent the entire afternoon in various activities outside, such as olympic games (hurdles, long jump, etc.), volleyball, spike ball, basketball and four square. On Wednesday, all students celebrated our grade 6s at a farewell assembly. In class, students completed an independent research project on a topic of their choice. They had to create a google slideshow presentation, and presented their topic to the class today. We learned about speed cubing, red pandas, sharks, pizza and the history of cake! We also created our own tessellation for a final math art project. It has been an absolute pleasure teaching your child this year. We have built...

Happy last Friday of the year everyone! We started the week with our field trip to the Royal Tyrrell Museum! Students had a blast digging for dinosaur bones, going on a hike in the badlands, and competing in a relay race as a pack of raptors. For math, students finished their work on algebra with a review and a final test. The remainder of the year will be spent working on our math fluency, and practicing our skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In ELAL, students had a final reading assessment and for National Indigenous Peoples Day, learned about treaty 7 and the Siksika Nation. After learning about the Siksika Nation's coat of arms, students created their own coat of arms on our last community walk of the year. At their sit spot, students including images and symbols in a coat of arms, and described how the images/symbols were important to them. They then shared one important image during a sharing circle. In Science, students observed a teacher demonstra...

Hello families! It's hard to believe we only have two weeks left before summer holidays. Students went on our field trip to the Calgary Zoo this week. They had a blast working to complete a scavenger hunt, which included challenges such as taking a picture of an animal that hibernates, taking a group picture standing like flamingos next to the flamingos and finding out the names of the gorillas. Thank you again to the parent volunteers who came out to support our students during the field trip! In math, students continued work on algebraic expressions, focusing on multiplication and division. They completed an emoji algebra challenge, where they were given different emoji puzzles, and had to find out the unknown values of the images. Next week, students will have an algebra quiz on Wednesday. In ELAL, students finished their fractured fairy tales unit with a comparison of the picture book Rapunzel by Paul O. Zelinsky and the movie Tangled. Students completed a story map of the movi...

Good afternoon! These past two weeks have been busy for our grade 5s. In math, students finished their patterns unit and began our final math unit on algebra. They explored the concept of preservation of equality by solving algebra puzzles online. Students reviewed the concept of variables in relation to algebraic expressions. They learned how to isolate the variable in equations with addition and subtraction, and verify that their answer was correct. Next week students will be learning how to isolate the variable in equations involving multiplication and division. In Science, students learned about the process of crystallization. They learned that crystals grow from a solution of liquid and when the solute is super dissolved in the solvent (supersaturation), crystals form on the string as the solvent evaporates. They completed a crystals lab, where they made a saturated solution with water and table salt and suspended a pipe cleaner shape from a string into the water. Crystals be...

Thank you to everyone that came out to our Celebration of Learning last week! It was great to see you, and I hope you enjoyed seeing all your student's hard work. Here are a few images from our class that evening: This week, students created tables of values from patterns, then worked to graph the patterns onto grid paper. They worked in partners and independently to come up with observations for various graphed patterns. We will be finished our patterns unit on Monday with a final test. In Science, students learned about different ways to separate mixtures, such as decanting, distillation, filtration, and magnetic separation. They also considered different real world applications for separation mixtures. In Social Studies, students researched the various roles citizens of New France had, such as habitant, seigneur, voyageur, coureur de bois, filles du roi, etc. They will be taking on the role of one of these citizens with a creative writing activity next week. In ELAL, we started ...

Good afternoon families. We continued to explore patterns this week in math. Students continued to find the pattern rule for a set of numbers, and worked in partners to determine the pattern rule of various patterns. We then learned how to find the pattern rule between two sets of numbers, and used the pattern to create input output tables.  In Social Studies, students learned about the fur trade, and will be engaging in a fur trade game next week. We continued creating amazing poetry in ELAL - making concrete poems (shape poems that take the shape of whatever subject the poem is about) and black out poetry. These will be up during our celebration of learning next week. We made toilet paper hamburgers in Art and students had so much fun sculpting their hamburgers. We will be painting them next week! We also had our community clean up yesterday, where students in grade 5 and 6 picked up garbage around Ramsay community. It was a beautiful day for it! A few reminders: We have school o...

Weekly Update: May 3

Good afternoon families! This week, students finished our order of operations unit in Math. Students played an order of operations bowling game in groups, then completed an order of operations scavenger hunt, before finishing the unit with our final unit test. We moved on to patterns, where students learned that patterns are predictable and have the ability to identify what will happen next. We went over what a pattern rule is, and determined the pattern rule for a variety of numerical patterns. In Science, we began our last unit of the year - classroom chemistry! Students learned about mixtures and solutions, such as homogenous mixtures and heterogenous mixtures. Next week, we will be engaging in our first science experiment of the unit with candy canes. In Social Studies, students finished their research on New France, and we will be focusing on the Fur Trade next week. In ELAL, students created limerick poems and cinquain poems. We also focused on water conservation and protection b...
